How to fight obsolescence in fashion and choose last longing items

4 min readJan 4, 2021

Too many times we feel we don’t have enough clothes to wear. Too many time it happens we are in front of our closet and we think: “I’d like that little bag but I don’t have it”. I’m going to tell you how it’s possible to have all you want having only the necessary!

Functional fashion bags

Canussa is a sustainable fashion brand available on renoon.com and it has been founded by Maria in 2017. She was inspired by the fact that as a consumer she couldn’t find ethically and sustainably made, but also functional, bags.

I have found the Instagram live made by Renoon and Maria on “timeless and made to last pieces” super interesting. If you didn’t know Renoon, I highly suggest you to take a look at their website. But what is it? It is a search platform that helps you find sustainable clothing from multiple websites at once and they have selected almost 200 brands you can shop from.

In this article I summed up the main concepts of the Instagram live. Let’s start!

Obsolescence of products

One of the main problems of the actual fashion industry is the obsolescence of products.

What does it mean? Most of the time product designers create a design which is meant to go out of style after a (short) period of time: this is called planned obsolescence.

This makes you wear clothes only for a short period, because they will quickly be perceived as “old”. For example, the fact that every season is characterized by different stylish colours make it seems that the main colours of the previous season are “old” and unstylish. In this way customers feel the need to update their wardrobe even if it is still absolutely functional.

Tips for last longing items

Here we are going to explain some tips to fight against obsolescence which is often based on the style rather than functionality.

The items have to be minimalist and not to follow any trend. In this way people can feel comfortable with them for many years. Simplicity has to be a key word of the fashion world: the simpler a cloth or a bag is the less we get bored about it!

Colours are also important: the best is to choose the ones which are easy to combine, specially black, white, but also red or other basic ones.

Another great idea is to produce double face items (ofc only when it is possible, like for belts) so you can wear them in different colours: it’s like to have two items instead of one and, depending on what you are wearing, you can adapt the best colour.

Functionality is also super important. Let’s make an example with bags. If you have only one black little bag which is functional and can be worn in many way you don’t need any other little bag. We’re talking about the ones which can be easily transformed in a porsche, a crossbody or a fanny bag. Summing up, if the product is functional and you can use it in multiple occasions you don’t need to consume an alternative or extra product.

Following all these tips we can wear the items as long as possible without thinking they are out of style.

The bottom line

Too many of us are still used to consume a lot of low quality and low-price products. But today we need a change: we need to consume less, higher quality and long-lasting products in which we feel comfortable and beautiful. A solution to start your journey to concious consumerism is to choose multifunctional and versatile items so you will use them everyday.

I hope I motivated you to choose functional and last longing clothes: you can start your journey to conscious consumerism searching your sustainable options on renoon.com.

Renoon’s mission is to make sure you can combine your love for Fashion and Planet by finding sustainable clothing from multiple websites at once. Start searching today or follow our Instagram account to stay tuned.
